Building a system that you can maintain consistently over years is the foundation of effective collection.

The Monthly Maintenance Routine

Every month: update your payment ledger within a week of the payment due date, recording what was owed and what was received. Check DCSS case status quarterly for any changes in enforcement status. Renew any court orders approaching expiration before they lapse. Review the obligor’s visible social media and public records periodically for signs of income or asset changes. This routine takes less than an hour per month but keeps your enforcement infrastructure current and ready to act on new information.

Annual Reviews

Once per year: review the total arrears balance and accrued interest. Assess whether a modification is warranted based on any income changes you’re aware of.
