What Your File Should Contain
Organize by category: (1) Court orders — every support order, modification, and related order. (2) Payment records — every payment received with date, amount, method, and running balance. (3) Communications — every significant communication with the paying parent about support. (4) DCSS records — case number, caseworker contact, case status updates. (5) Financial records — the paying parent’s tax returns, pay stubs, and any financial disclosures made in court.
A well-organized file is a weapon. Custodial parents who can pull up a specific document in 30 seconds at a hearing are more effective than those who arrive with a shoebox. Organization signals preparation. Preparation produces results.
