Child Support Recovery Timeline: What to Expect in Your First 90 Days

For custodial parents who are just beginning the enforcement process — or restarting after a period of inactivity — having a realistic 90-day timeline helps set expectations and maintain momentum through the early stages when results can be slow to materialize.

Days 1-14: Setup

Open a DCSS case if you don’t have one. Gather all existing court orders — the original child support order and all modifications. Build your payment ledger from the date of the first order to present. Calculate total arrears. Request a FPLS search if the obligor’s current address or employer is unknown. These foundational steps don’t produce collection immediately, but they are prerequisites for everything that follows.

Days 15-30: DCSS Activation

Confirm with your DCSS caseworker that income withholding is active. Confirm that arrears are certified for tax intercept. Request license suspension referral if arrears exceed 30 days. Request passport denial certification if arrears exceed $2,500. These administrative actions run automatically once activated and begin producing results without additional effort from you.

Days 31-60: Independent Action

File for a debtor’s examination to discover current assets and income. Issue subpoenas to known banks and the obligor’s employer for financial records. Review results and identify enforcement targets. This is the highest-effort phase — it requires court filings, service of process, and hearing attendance — but it produces the information that drives specific enforcement actions.

Days 61-90: Asset Enforcement

Based on OEX results, initiate the appropriate asset enforcement actions: bank levy on discovered accounts, abstract of judgment recording against discovered real property, or income assignment against discovered business income. By day 90, with DCSS administrative enforcement running and at least one independent enforcement action underway, you have a functioning enforcement system that can sustain collection over time.
