The United States has reciprocal child support enforcement arrangements with many countries — including the UK, Australia, Canada, and most EU member states. California can transmit orders to foreign central authorities for registration and enforcement. For countries without reciprocal arrangements, enforcement requires navigating foreign court systems — which is more difficult but sometimes possible through international family law practitioners.

Passport denial works even for paying parents traveling internationally. A paying parent whose US passport is revoked or denied because of child support arrears cannot travel internationally without resolving the arrears or establishing a payment plan. This is particularly powerful for paying parents who travel for work or who maintain ties to foreign countries.
